Off-the-shelf wardrobes rarely make the most of a bedroom. They stop short of the ceiling, leave gaps at the sides and come with whatever rails and shelves the manufacturer chose. Bespoke wardrobes are designed around your room and the way you use it, so every alcove, corner and inch of height earns its place. At Kitchencraft Design Studio in Danbury, Essex, we design fitted bedroom furniture using the same four-step process we follow for our kitchens, and our design service is free with no obligation.
| Stage | What happens | What you come away with |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Consultation | We talk through your requirements, likes and dislikes, lifestyle and how you use the room | A clear brief for your design |
| 2. Measuring | Your designer visits your home to measure the bedroom in detail | An accurate survey of the room |
| 3. Design presentation | We present your 3D design at our Danbury showroom and you explore it in our VR headset | A bedroom you have walked around before anything is made |
| 4. Materials | Door style, handles, internal layout and storage solutions are finalised | A finished design and a detailed quote |
What are bespoke wardrobes?
Bespoke wardrobes are fitted wardrobes designed to the exact measurements of your room and built around what you need to store. Unlike freestanding or flat-pack units, they can run floor to ceiling and wall to wall, fitting alcoves and awkward corners so no space goes to waste.
The difference is in the planning as much as the furniture. Good fitted wardrobe design starts with how you live: how much you hang compared with what you fold, where the shoes go and whether two people share the space. That is why our process begins with a conversation, not a catalogue.

Step 1: What do we ask at your first consultation?
Your first consultation is a relaxed conversation about your requirements, your likes and dislikes and how you use the bedroom day to day. It gives your designer the brief that every later decision is checked against.
Questions we usually cover include:
- How much do you hang compared with what you fold?
- Do you need long hanging for coats and dresses, or mostly shirts and jackets?
- Where do shoes, bags and accessories live at the moment?
- Would you like a dressing table, bedside cabinets or drawers as part of the design?
- Are you drawn to a classic, Shaker, traditional or contemporary look?
Bring photos of bedrooms you like, and tell us what annoys you about your current wardrobes. A door that clips the bed or a shelf too high to reach is exactly the kind of detail a bespoke design can fix.
Step 2: Why do made to measure wardrobes need a home visit?
Made to measure wardrobes only fit properly if the measurements are right, so your designer visits your home to survey the bedroom in detail. Bedrooms are rarely as square as they look, and small errors show up as gaps once the doors are on.
The measure covers wall lengths and ceiling height, along with windows, doors, radiators, sockets and light switches. It also records alcoves, chimney breasts, sloping ceilings and walls that are out of square, all common in older Essex homes. Getting this right means your wardrobes fill the space and sit cleanly against walls and ceilings.
Step 3: How does the design presentation work?
When your design is ready, we invite you to our showroom in Danbury at a time that suits you and present it over a coffee. Using our VR headset, you can step inside a virtual model of your new bedroom and look around it as if it were already fitted.
Seeing the room at full scale helps with decisions that are hard to judge on a drawing. You can check how much floor space remains, whether hinged doors open comfortably past the bed and how the wardrobes sit alongside windows and doors. If anything feels wrong, we refine the design before anything is ordered.
The showroom also includes bedroom displays, among them classic Shaker-style designs, so you can open doors and drawers and see the finishes for yourself.
Step 4: Which materials and fittings do you choose?
The final stage is confirming your door style, handles, internal layout and storage solutions. Once these are agreed, we prepare a detailed, transparent quote so you know exactly what is included.
Door style
Doors set the character of the room. We design with bedroom ranges from Stori Collection and Second Nature in classic, Shaker, traditional and contemporary styles, with sliding or hinged doors depending on your space.
Handles
Handles finish the look and get used every day. We will help you choose handles and knobs that suit your doors and the rest of the room.
Internal layout
The inside of a wardrobe is where bespoke design pays off most. We plan hanging rails at the right heights, shelving, internal drawers and space for shoes, so everything has a set place.
Storage solutions
Storage can go well beyond the wardrobe itself. Matching drawers, bedside cabinets and dressing tables keep the room consistent, and top units take storage up to the ceiling for things you only need now and then.
Who designs and fits your wardrobes?
You work with one designer from your first consultation through to installation, so the person who measured your room and drew the design sees it fitted. Our designers, Emma and Lynne, are backed by a team with over 30 years of experience designing, supplying and installing kitchens, bedrooms and studies across Essex.
We use the same suppliers and the same standards for bedrooms, kitchens and studies, which helps if you are planning more than one room.
Frequently asked questions
Are bespoke wardrobes worth it?
For most bedrooms, yes. Bespoke fitted wardrobes use the full height and width of the room, fit around alcoves and awkward corners, and have interiors planned around what you actually store, which freestanding furniture cannot match.
Should I choose sliding or hinged wardrobe doors?
Sliding doors suit tighter rooms because they need no clearance to open, so they work well where the bed sits close to the wardrobe. Hinged doors open the whole wardrobe at once and suit classic and Shaker styles. You can check the clearance for yourself in the VR model.
Is the design service free?
Yes. Our design service is free and carries no obligation, from the first consultation through to the design presentation and quote.
Can my bedroom furniture match my kitchen or study?
Yes. We use the same suppliers and standards across kitchens, bedrooms and studies, so colours and finishes can carry through your home.
